Die Another Day 2002

Die Another Day is a spy thriller film was released in 2002. It is the twentieth film in the James Bond series, the main character's staring Pierce Brosman and Halle Berry, the fourth and last film stars Pierce. It was directed by Lee Tamahori produce by Micheal G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. It is made by MGM one of the biggest studios in Hollywood. The film marks James Bond 40th anniversary. The first was in released in 1962 Dr. No. The film explore and illustrates the theme of all the actions sequences like car chasing, guns, gadgets cars, explosion. It also has elements of a James Bond film with all of the actions sequence and Bond with the Bond girl.

The basic outline of the story is like all the others James Bond films, Bond as the hero with the bond girl on a quest a mission. But this time what's the mission? the synopsis of the story is about Bond as a M16 british agent fighting against North Korea for diamonds.

The film is a spy thriller and opens with James bond titling sequence with the graphics and iconic soundtrack. The soundtrack also represent the theme of the film as it got a heavy beat and thriller type sound and spy sound music which also connotes to the spy genre. The red colour in it's graphics symbolises love and death and it always connotes to James Bond film and all of this kind of genre of film. The establishing shots tells the audience where they are on a beach but not any beach it has barriers something is wrong not a nice place, the setting is in dark as this shows night time setting. The camera pans left to right and the audience can see fire burning so know it is not a deserted place. The scene cut to a long shot of the sea. In addition to this, Bond comes in dramatically on blue waves surfing. Music and sound is used in the opening scene to demonstrate bond on a mission which tells the narrative of the opening scene. Diagetic sound is used with the waves sound which match the action and event of the opening scene as it builds tension to the audience. This is supported with the fast paced music (non diagetic) with instruments like drum, violin and trumpet. All of this with the music, graphics and sound immediately grabs the audience expectations of James Bond films.

The initial equilibrium at the beginning see's Bond trying to save the world fighting off his enemies as he secretly going into a prison camp seeking something as he comes face to face with the Antagonist. It then changes into disequilibrium as something happens when it goes into a fighting scene, which what's upset the story getting to a new situation at the end. This goes into the final equilibrium of the story before as he was captured and tortured in prison. The film also open with an enigma which is used of an effect of puzzling the audience as James Bond swap with another character wearing the same costume. This narrative device is traditionally used in thriller films as are the roles of Protagonist vs Antagonist

The editing has been criticised for trying o be too different from the normal Bond films and the result is same weird normal moments which damage the pace of the film. The mix match editing of the plane in the middle of the film a bit sloppy. In addition to this, the opening scene, the editing seems to mis the drama, it doesn't match the drama in it's editing. didn't know what was going on in the surf scene.

Fast paced editing with Diagetic sound like guns, cars (Non Diagetic) music in the background to highlight a key moment in the film thriller type music. Cross cutting editing to show the stories to tell two narratives as both hero James Bond and the Bond girl Jinx fighting to escape as bond in a car chase. The action sequence and fast editing echos bond fast thinking. The gadgets and cars are always in James Bond Films.

The cultural aspects of the film shows Bond as a British secret agent against North Korea which is another motive of the film the difference between culture and race. Other bond films dealt with the cold war in Russian. This film dealt with war with North Korea showing how China is taking over the world.

This clip includes a Close up shot of Pierce showing emotions of love interest. A long shot of Halle Berry as she comes out of the beach introducing her. a Shot reserve shot showing the relationship between the two characters and showing them  as the other character's see each other. The music supports Halle Berry's arrival using non-diagetic sounds with instruments including violins, slow steady music as she appears out of the sea, a long shot of her and then the camera cuts back to Halle and Pierce showing the chemistry between them, telling the narrative of the story of bond first meeting the bond girl. The establishing shot shows a beach, a day time setting. It also shows a bar with iconic  props, tables and chairs, drinking glasses and a peaceful atmosphere which is showing in a good way Bond meeting the Bond girl, his accomplice. Halle Berry's Jinx character has a gun in her waist showing she is no ordinary girl on a beach. Visual links to the other Bond films shot of Halle Berry dress in the same costumes as hersa la andrews. The films marks it's 40 years anniversary so the film reference each of the other James Bond film.

The story covers all the drama and all the twisted and turns used in  all the James Bond Films and which the audience expects. this is the ending which again is typical of all the bond film ending.
The use of ariel shot on a hill of with the shot of the house with a helicopter it pans round. It shows them complete their mission like all the James Bond films ending Bond gets the girl. Background lighting medium light with orange background symbolises peace and calm. The mise en scene shows their in a bed room props like a bed curtains and blinds.

  1. Some good detail and use of examples Nesta. Correct the errors and add in some additional explanation where noted on the paper copy and develop the ending - it's too abrupt!
